I recall vividly as a child pondering the image of the piano as uniform: every piano has a keyboard with 88 keys and they all sound alike.  Right?  Well, no.
I believe it led to a deep confusion about the instrument and about sound in general.
Since those naïve days I have become increasingly aware of the specificity of sound: Every key on a piano does NOT sound alike.  There is a huge difference between the sound of white and black keys.  Every piano does not NOT sound alike.
Noticing these differences makes all the difference.
