All too often the exclamation point implies scolding.  In the case of music it is more like an indication that something is about to happen that might, just might, change your life forever.
Perhaps it is an interruption in the Mozart theme you always heard played a certain way--not necessarily the way Mozart's punctuation indicated.
Perhaps it is more like the little boy, wanting me to hear this music that he so much loved, holding the stylus poised over the recording of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra saying, "Don't be frightened!"
