Images, not Ideas

Today on a blog for music theory people someone quoted a line about modern culture being more about images than ideas.  How true.
Take sound, for example.
As Eric Havelock points out in one of his beautiful studies of the transition of Greek culture from aural to printed, recordings essentially put performance into print, just as the alphabet and its ensuing written culture locked aural experience into print.
Another example of image rather than idea.
