I love being part of a vibrant audience, such as the one that kept me company last night at Barbes, the club in Brooklyn where my daughter sings once a month.  I try not to miss this exciting experience, not because I'm her mother, but because from it I learn so much about what it means to listen and to make music.

Seated near me were three people, one a friend of a friend, the other two total strangers who had never heard her before.  As the evening unfolded their joy became increasingly palpable, radiant.  I'm sure it was not lost on the musicians because I was hearing things I had never heard before and the basic material is all very familiar to me.

But the music is always new.  The mix of people in the room is always new.  I love live music plus audience.
