I recall Hans Neumann saying how much he regretted the day that he knew he had played for the first time everything there was to play by Mozart.
I have thought about this a lot, as I often have the sensation, playing works by Mozart, that they are entirely new to me.
Perhaps he had a better memory than I do.  Perhaps I don't want to have that kind of memory, but prefer a sense of the new ongoing.
Perhaps I am so aware of myself changing that I cannot identify the person who played the piece in the "past."
