Discomfort is a big no-no for professional musicians.  We are supposed to play whatever it is just because we can, not because we really want to.  Professionalism of this sort has not done music any favors.
For one thing, it has blurred the lines between engagement and its opposite: detachment.
My students are unafraid to acknowledge discomfort because they have been taught to recognize and acknowledge it as the opposite of pleasure.
