Going to Extremes

Last night I heard a lovely concert played by a chamber orchestra of pros and amateurs, serious, elegantly trained, most enjoyable.
I was moved by the conductor's audacity in beginning the evening with a sound so soft you could hardly hear it.  His exploration of extreme dynamics was the standard for a reading of a Haydn Symphony, No. 13.  We need to know that pianissimo, though really soft, has not disappeared.
