So much of what is assumed about music and tradition is the inevitable link between teachers and their students, fathers and their sons.  Haven't we learned enough from psychology to realize the unreality of that point of view?
Don't students rebel against their teachers, just as sons against their fathers?
The irony is that so many adult music students slide right into the role of dutiful offspring, some without awareness of doing so.  More's the pity.
This absence of vitality is evident in our loss of touch with the imagined reality of days long gone.
Recordings rarely help in this process.
