Okay.  I'm out of hiding on that one.  I never practiced myself; that's why I am so dedicated to playing the piano.  I refused to let irrelevant, short-sighted goals interfere with my fascination with either 1) the sound of the instrument or 2) my childhood conviction that certain sounds gave me kinship with a long dead composer.
There is no way to generalize about either of those two powerful motivations: every child must experience them on their own terms.  And they do, if given room to explore and experiment.  Regimentation simply turns kids off, the very kids we need to have involved in this music that continues to sustain me and so many other people, not all of them over 40, all these years.
