Thinking Tone

It took me a while to figure out that young students, unable to find the answer to a question I had asked would sing "I don't know" on the note that was the answer to the question.
It happens all the time: I sometimes ask a student to find the pitch that unifies a certain page or section of a piece and, as if by chance, the student will lightly brush the key that is the answer, with no conscious intention of playing that key.
It is all clear evidence that tone is real, at least as real as words, and that thinking tone comes naturally.
