It must be difficult to deal with the less-than-beautiful, otherwise teachers and parents (and a few others) would not go to such pains to discourage noticing.  If I confine my thoughts to music - which is what I know about - I would say that awareness of the contrast between beauty and something else, I could not have named it, is what motivated me to stay in music despite many obstacles.
That something else I could define only by a sensation: "I don't like it."  A fundamental declaration of taste.  
There is nothing wrong with it.  In fact, without unpleasant sounds there really is no music as we know it.
